If you are ever bored and looking for something to do in WoW, try jacking up all your graphics settings, zooming into first person mode, turning off the interface, and taking one of the long, cross-country flight routes. I was surprised at how enthralled I was just watching the landscape go by. Areas I think of as boring were absolutely stunning when I actually paid attention.

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately running new hunter characters to level 10. My main goal is to research the level 10 pet quests for a new top-secret project that I’m working on, but since that requires several new characters I’ve decided to kill two birds with one stone and set these characters up for my Grand Experiment as well.
If you’ve recently untrained your main pet in order to get data on Cobra Reflexes, and then you decide to go out hunting Hawkbane, do NOT forget to re-train Growl. Or else you will be very confused, and then very sorry, and then very dead, all quite quickly.
I said in a post a bit ago that diversity and complexity of WoW pets are one reason I like my hunter way more than I like pet classes in other games. But as I mentioned, there is another reason also: underlying playstyle. In short, the hunter class allows for both simple, uncomplicated play or complex, skillful play, depending on what floats your boat.
I haven’t had much time for the site this weekend because I’ve been trying to help my husband get his first game out the door. I’m supposed to be detoxing from a year of high-pressure work, but instead I’m remodeling challenge grids for a casual game. Actually, it’s pretty fun — but it’s not getting the site updated, more’s the pity. And in my free time — or rather, my other free time, since all my time is technically free right now — I’ve been playing.
Well, I made it! After several days of way too much WoW, Mania is now level 70! My mousing arm is killing me and my husband is pretty close to killing me, but now I can copy over to the PTR and check out all the cool new creatures myself! I still have some slogging to do on live to get my flying mount, but thankfully I can just copy myself to the PTR multiple times and solve that problem temporarily.
When I was in San Francisco weekend before last, I had some time to watch my friend play his warlock. I was surprised at the bond he had developed with his voidwalker. It wasn’t a deep emotional bond — this is a manly hard-core gamer, after all — but he spoke to it often, encouraging it in fights and chiding it when it (he) did something stupid. He also told me that he really wishes he could name it, like we do with hunter pets. The game may imply that he is summoning a new demon each time he gets the previous one killed, but to him it’s a continuous personality.
Well, I’m back. My little business trip didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but life is like that sometimes. Perhaps it’s for the best — I wouldn’t have had as much time for Petopia if the project I was pitching this weekend had gotten off the ground. Anyway, while napping on the plane I realized that I had probably better get my butt in gear and level Mania up to 70.
